Berrien County Animal Control will soon begin assessing fees to the owners of livestock that have gone roaming. During Thursday’s meeting of the Berrien County Board of Commissioners, Administration Committee Chair Jim Curran said Animal Control Director Tiffany Peterson brought the matter to his attention.

“The fee schedule deals with dogs and cats, but when she takes in livestock, there is no fee schedule,” Curran said. “Sometimes, she houses those animals for some time and has to care for them and feed them.”

Curran noted it is illegal to have livestock at large. The board approved a fee schedule for when Animal Control has to house such animals. It will be $50 for the first day with $15 per day after that. Subsequent offenses would come with higher fees. Curran said the fees were based on what other nearby counties charge.
