The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is recommending a $200,000 Land and Water Conservation Fund grant for a parks project in St. Joseph Township. Township Manager Denise Cook tells WSJM News it’s for the Carronde Park Water Trail Connection and Fishing Platform.

“What we’ve proposed is an ADA-compliant fishing platform, an accessible kayak launch, accessible walkways, and parking that will all be along the river’s edge there,” Cook said.

The 19 acre Carronde Park currently features a ball field, a tennis court, pavilions, and a playground. Cook says the accessible platform made possible by the grant will be good for those who fish in the park.

“We have lots of people who fish down there, and they just kind of go off the banks, it’s not always the safest. These would be nice, accessible fishing platforms.”

The state grant is a match, meaning the project’s total cost will be $400,000. Cook says construction likely won’t start until 2022. Also on Tuesday, the DNR announced its support for a $300,000 grant for the South Haven Area Recreation Authority’s Regional Soccer Complex Development.
