A grant of $377,000 is going to Berrien County to help it recoup COVID-19 expenses. Speaking to county commissioners on Thursday, Berrien County Community Development Director Dan Fette said the money has to be used in a way that benefits low to moderate income people.

“The protective measures that we’ve put in place to protect the public in our own facilities, the PPE that we’ve acquired over the last few months, the PPE that we will have to acquire moving forward into next year, these are the kinds of things that we can demonstrate actually serve a low to moderate income community because it provides for protection and for the access to government services that normally wouldn’t be available during a period that we’re closed,” Fette said.

Fette said county staff are working on identifying things that qualify for the grant. Either way, he said having an extra $377,000 and having to decide what to use it for is a “good problem to have.”
