The COVID-19 cases in Michigan and Berrien County are headed down. Berrien County Health Department Health Officer Nicki Britten says there are roughly 100 new cases a day in the county, down from 165 a few weeks ago.

“It really started to go down just after Thanksgiving,” says Britten. “We were initially thinking maybe it was due to just the slowdown in testing around Thanksgiving. However, the trend has sustained for a couple of weeks.”

She says that’s been encouraging but another metric is not following along as well.

“What is not showing the same downward trend is the hospital census and the number of people hospitalized with COVID.”

Britten says that is a little better of an indicator of infections as it’s not as influenced by the number of tests given.
