By a unanimous 6-0 vote, the state Capitol Commission has banned the open carry of weapons in the building. The vote follows the insurrection attempt at the U.S. Capitol last week by pro-Trump rioters, with many of them now facing charges and not allowed to fly. It also follows an armed riot in Lansing and in the Capitol in April in response to COVID-19 restrictions by Governor Whitmer. A state senator posted photos of armed men in the Senate gallery that day. The ban does not include carrying concealed weapons, which is still allowed. Both Whitmer and Attorney General Dana Nessel say that also needs to go.
