Indiana Michigan Power has given more than $8,000 to the Southwest Michigan Community Action Agency to help out Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren County residents struggling for access to food. Southwest Michigan Community Action Agency Director Kim Smith Oldham says the support is critical for the agency to address hunger issues during an unprecedented time. The donation, with approval from the Michigan Public Service Commission, is related to changes in costs associated with the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. Once the act took effect and lowered I&M bills along with I&M’s taxes, it started donating remaining funds to the SMCAA. The donation will go into the SMCAA’s Food Giveaways program.
