Police are warning about a new scam after a southeast Michigan man was bilked out of tens of thousands of dollars. Troy Police Sergeant Meghan Lehman says the man was called by someone claiming to be law enforcement. He was told his name was on a package of drugs sent to Columbia.

“The supposed law enforcement officer told the victim that he had to wire him some money to take care of the warrant, which he did,” says Lehman. “He sent a lot of money out of town. It ultimately added up to $140,000 and it was sent to a couple different countries.”

Lehman says the victim had never sent any package, but she believes a language barrier contributed to him being scammed.
