The Berrien County Health Department has got its mind on equity when it comes to the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines. Speaking to a committee of the county commission Thursday, Berrien County Health Officer Nicki Britten said vaccination efforts aim to reach everyone, and that’s why different kinds of clinics in different places are needed.

“Having that array of options of how we’re approaching it to be able to tailor it to our target populations is immensely important,” Britten said.

Britten said distribution has to engage the communities where the vaccines are given, and help is sought from leaders within marginalized populations.

“Making sure that we’re making intentional effort to really seek out and ensure that vaccine is getting to communities that just might not be the first ones to jump up and down when healthcare and the government are coming through.”

Britten said the department takes clinics to people who can’t make it to its larger events at central locations. She added maintaining trust with the population being served is also key.
