Support is growing for bills in the Michigan House and Senate to expand the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to include sexual orientation and gender identity, according to backers of the bills. Governor Gretchen Whitmer supports the bills.

“With this bill, Michigan has the opportunity to become a model of equality,” says Whitmer. “Every step we take toward enshrining protections on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation will impact Michiganders for generations to come.”

State Senator Jeremy Moss sponsored the bill in the Senate.

“This is a document of my values as a gay person,” says Moss. “I also believe that this is a document of Michigan values too; of decency, of kindness, of respect for one another.”

Whitmer says the bills would also be good for the Michigan economy.
