President Joe Biden signed a $1.9 trillion COVID-19 stimulus bill in law on Thursday. The measure includes direct payments of up to 14-hundred dollars for individuals, and billions to help schools and colleges reopen. During a virtual discussion Governor Gretchen Whitmer highlighted the importance of the federal funding.

“Checks and unemployment benefits will help folks stay afloat and put food on the table as they deal with the economic hardships,” says Whitmer. “The child tax credit will cut child poverty in half. Take that in for a second. One in 5 American children live in poverty today, and we’re gonna cut that in half.”

No Republican voted for the legislation, which passed the House on Wednesday and the Senate on Saturday. GOP lawmakers said the bill is too expensive, and is packed with provisions not directly related to fighting the pandemic.
