Starting Monday, all high school athletes will be required to be tested for COVID-19 before every practice and every game. Governor Whitmer made the announcement and said the increase in testing is due to the rise in cases over the past two weeks.

“The path forward on further reengagements depends on increasing rapid testing and continuing to ramp up vaccinations,” says Whitmer. “We must also provide businesses, schools, and communities the resources they need to keep people safe as they return to normal day to day activities.”

Whitmer says vaccinations are up to over 3.2 million, but those don’t yet include teenagers.

“Last week’s numbers are a reality check that COVID-19 is not yet behind us. We may be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, but we’re still in the tunnel.”

A positive from Friday’s announcement is outdoor sports stadiums can increase capacity to 20%. That means the Detroit Tigers will be able to have around 8,000 fans at Opening Day instead of 1,000.
