A forum on social justice will be held by Lake Michigan College Wednesday. Chair of social sciences Amy Scrima tells WSJM News it’s part of an ongoing program to have students choose topics of concern and then speak with experts for their perspective. In previous years, honors program students have picked healthcare and the environment, and this year it’s social justice.

“The top three areas that they indicated concern about were racial inequality,” Scrima said. “82% of the participants surveyed indicated that is their number one concern. Healthcare access and equality with 62%, and economic inequality.”

Panelists for Wednesday’s forum will include Michigan House candidate Chokwe Pitchford, SHARP Foundation founder Gwen Sharp, St. Joseph Mayor Pro Tem Laura Goos, and Andrews University Vice President of Diversity Michael Nixon. Scrima says they fall into the categories of grass roots, policy, and programs.

“The grassroots group will respond with their perspective for five minutes, then the programs group will respond for five minutes, and then the policy group will respond for five minutes.”

The panel discussion will be open to the public and held virtually. You can register at Lake Michigan College’s website.
