Governor Gretchen Whitmer says Michigan is in a similar position as other Midwest states as COVID cases rise. ABC News asked her about a comment from Dr. Anthony Fauci in which he said the state may have reopened too soon.

“We actually have had a very strategic response to the virus, but at this juncture, we know that the variants are here, and that with the decreased following of protocols and more mobility is creating the problem that we’re seeing,” Whitmer said. “It’s not unique to Michigan. It’ happening all across the Midwest right now.”

Whitmer said context matters a great deal. She said had “we simply adopted what the restaurant association was proposing a couple of months ago, everything would be shutting down right now.”
