New figures released by the state show that by mid-April, there could be more people with COVID-19 in the hospital in Michigan than there were during the spring peak last year. State Epidemiologist Dr. Sarah Lyon-Callo says hospitalizations are up 45% in the past week.

“Michigan is now number one in the nation in terms of our number of cases and our case rates. We’re also number one in the nation in terms of the percentage of inpatient beds that are being used for COVID-19. That has increased more than 200% since our February 28th low.”

As more older residents are immunized, the average age of COVID-19 patients is falling. Many of the latest outbreaks have been connected to high school sports.
