Election legislation that’s been unveiled by legislative Republicans in Michigan will be the focus of a press conference in Lansing with Benton Harbor Mayor Marcus Muhammad and other leaders from around the state. Muhammad said during a city commission meeting this past week the “so-called reforms” would increase ID requirements for voting and limit absentee voting options. He said the legislation would have a disproportionate effect on people in urban areas.
“It’s really, really the wicked face of Jim Crow,” Muhammad said. “The type of decisions behind the mind of Plessy versus Ferguson, Dred Scott versus Sanford, with a plan to basically suppress and take the state of Michigan back into the days of reconstruction.”
Muhammad said the governor has pledged to veto the package, but there are other tactics that could be used to make it law. The press conference in Lansing has been announced by the Black Elected Officials and Concerned Leaders to be held at 100 North Capitol Street in Lansing at 1 p.m. on April 20.
