This coming week is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, when the 911 dispatchers of the nation are honored for their work to protect the public. Van Buren County Sheriff Dan Abbott says 911 telecommunicators are the “first voice of calm that a person hears when calling for help, and their caring, compassion, and commitment to the citizens and visitors to Van Buren County is on display each day.” He adds 911 responders “may experience more stress and traumatic events in the course of 12 hours than the average person will endure for a lifetime.” Van Buren County 911 processes an annual average of 42,000 calls to 911. That works out to a phone call every 4 minutes around the clock.
