There is a little bit of good news when it comes to the coronavirus in Michigan. Speaking on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Governor Whitmer said the state is starting to see the beginning of what could be a slowdown in infections. She also said a variant is one of the big reasons for the spike in cases.

“This variant, the B.1.1.7 variant is what is growing so quickly here in Michigan,” says Whitmer. “We have the second most of it than Florida, at least that was the last data that I saw. Michigan and Florida are not next to each other, but this is the time in the year that snowbirds come home from Florida, where people are going on spring break and all of these things can contribute to spread.”

More than 5,500 new COVID-19 cases and 69 deaths were reported in the state Saturday. The cases confirmed by Michigan’s Department of Health and Human Services pushed the state’s total to 785,307 since the start of the pandemic more than a year ago. Of the 69 reported deaths, 60 were identified during a review of vital records. Michigan’s daily case rate has led the U.S. for weeks.
