DNR: Leave Bird Nests Alone If Possible

Now that it’s spring time, you may start seeing bird nests around your home, even those of geese and mallard ducks. Michigan DNR wildlife coordinator Hanna Schauer has advice if you see one.

“If you come across a nest, the best thing to do is leave it alone, give it plenty of space,” says Schauer. “If you can, keep your pets away from it as well. That way the hen doesn’t get spooked off and leave the nest for some reason. She’ll sit and incubate her eggs for about a month.”

You may not realize it, but Schauer says the migratory birds, nests, and eggs are protected by federal law.
