Communities Having Trouble Filling Summer Jobs

Cities around Michigan are having a hard time filling seasonal jobs for the summer. Port Huron City Manager James Freed told Michigan News Network this week in his community they need people to handle jobs in parks and recreation and mowing the lawn in the cemetery.

“Candidly, it’s because everybody’s off on unemployment.” Freed said. “We can’t get people to come back and work for $12 an hour when they’re getting such good unemployment benefits right now.”

Freed says these summer jobs often lead to full time jobs with the city. He notes they’re even having trouble finding high school students looking for part-time work this year.
