Michigan Chief Medical Executive Joneigh Khaldun says the COVID-19 situation in the state has improved, but we still have a long way to go. Speaking Thursday, Dr. Khaldun said cases remain high, but some key metrics are trending in the right direction.

“As of this week, Michigan has 493 cases per one million people,” Khaldun said. “That’s 30% lower than it was two weeks ago, but still four times where we were in the middle of February. Data still indicates that we have broad community spread.”

Khaldun said that includes spread of the variants. Michigan’s percentage of positive tests is at about 13.2%, nearly three times where we were in February, but down from a couple of weeks ago. For Thursday, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported 3,623 additional cases of COVID-19. That brings the state to a pandemic total of more than 837,000 cases. There were 109 additional deaths reported, bringing the state to a total of 17,576. 78 of those additional deaths were identified through a review of vital records. Berrien County reported 41 additional COVID cases for Tuesday, now at a pandemic total of 13,168 with 249 deaths. Van Buren County had 23 additional cases for the day for a total of 6,250 with 100 deaths. Cass County reported 10 new cases for the day for a total of 4,575 with 69 deaths. All three counties recorded one additional death for the day.
