Indiana Michigan Power will hold the official unveiling of its newest solar farm Thursday. Spokesperson Schnee Garrett tells WSJM News the St. Joseph Solar Farm in Granger, Indiana is a 210-acre property off the Indiana Toll Road. I&M worked on the facility with Notre Dame University.

“There are approximately 58,000 solar panels, each measuring 86 inches long and 51 inches wide,” Garrett said. “If you do that math, the solar panels inside our facility would fill up more than 30 football fields.”

Garrett says I&M is offering more renewable energy options to its customers because that’s what they want.

“The facility will generate enough electricity to power more than 2,700 homes annually, and the facility is I&M’s fifth and largest solar farm yet, and Notre Dame’s largest solar project.”

The St. Joseph Solar Farm is in addition to three I&M solar farms in Indiana and one in Michigan, in Watervliet. The Watervliet farm generates 4.6 megawatts of power, compared to the 20 megawatts generated by the new St. Joseph Solar Farm. Garrett says it has specially designed panels that tilt in the direction of the sun throughout the day. On hand for the unveiling will be several dignitaries, including I&M President Lisa Barton.
