Severance deals for state officials would be limited under legislation approved unanimously by the Michigan House. Representative John Roth, a Republican from Traverse City, says the bills limit severance packages to 12 weeks for state employees and prohibit the state from negotiating non-disclosure agreements.

“Nondisclosure agreements shouldn’t be the case unless for some reason is a legal dispute of some kind,” says Roth. “They should be able to disclose what went on and why they were in office and to say that you’re going away and you don’t have to talk about it? Wrong.”

Lawmakers, other elected state officials and appointees could not get severance pay unless it contains legal costs. The legislation now moves on to the Senate.
