Parts of west Michigan are experiencing a severe drought. That includes all of Kent, Ottawa, and Allegan counties and parts of eight others, including Berrien and Van Buren. Other counties are in a moderate drought. Kevin Robson is executive director of the Michigan Blueberry Commission and is with the Michigan Farm Bureau.

“We’re about six-and-a-half inches of rain behind the running average,” says Robson. “We have farmers with seeds in the ground and there was moisture in the ground to get started, but we are in need of water.”

Robson says rain is expected in the next few days. He says there was damage to apple and peach crops in southwest Michigan with a few nights of freezing conditions a few weeks ago, but nothing major.
