Tuesday marks the one year anniversary of George Floyd’s death. He died when a Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee on his neck for about 9 and a half minutes. Floyd’s death, captured on video by a bystander, led to worldwide protests and a reexamination of racism and policing in the U.S. Detroit Police Chief James Craig weighed in this week with Michigan News Network.

“The death of Mr. Floyd certainly has changed our profession,” Craig said. “Clearly, our profession is in crisis right now.”

While Craig admits there’s a need for police reform, he says current aggression against police officers is unlike anything he’s ever witnessed. Craig says it’s critical for police to build trust with the community to have shared responsibility for addressing crime and disorder.
