The Boys and Girls Club of Benton Harbor has been awarded a $150,000 donation by Indiana Michigan Power so the club can continue having an Academic Success Coach at the Fettig Youth Campus. The donation will support the full-time coach for three years. Boys and Girls Club of Benton Harbor CEO Mackenzie Kastl tells WSJM News the coach works with kids to help them excel academically.

“That person works really closely with our K through 8th graders on basic literacy, math, science, really the basics,” Kastl said. “So when they come to us after school, we’re able to do what we call Power Hour, which is our homework help time, and really support our kids through our Academic Success programming.”

Kastl says the Academic Success program has been effective at reaching more young people in the community. She notes hundreds of area students have worked with the coach. The I&M donation is a renewal of a donation from three years ago, and Kastl says it’s wonderful to have a supporter like I&M and the Cook plant backing the Boys and Girls Club and its mission.
