Spectrum Health and Beaumont are planning a merger that would create Michigan’s largest health system and employer. Oakland University President Dr. Ora Hirsch Pescovitz said the merger combines two administrative functions, which could lead to lower costs for patients.

“I do hope that healthcare will become more accessible and more affordable and maybe better, because one of the things that we can do is say that each of the two systems can learn the best of what the other does.”

Since Beaumont operates in eastern Michigan and Spectrum is in western Michigan there’s no overlap, which increases equal access to health care across the state. The new health system will be called the BHSH System temporarily, but eventually will get a new name.
