This week marks the one year anniversary of the Supreme Court decision allowing the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, to continue. State Representative Mary Cavanaugh of Redford says the ruling only specified that the Trump administration used improper procedures to end DACA. She says the Biden administration committed to keeping the program in place as the Dream Act has passed the U.S. House. She spoke on Michigan News Network this week.

“This puts the program and its 700,000 young people at risk of losing their livelihood and living in limbo,” Cavanaugh said. “Without legislation permanently protecting these Dreamers, these individuals will continue to live in fear of DACA being overturned, and for them to leave the only country they’ve known.”

Cavanaugh says the act would enshrine into federal law for individuals brought to the U.S. as children and provide them a pathway to citizenship. The Dream Act has not been approved by the U.S. Senate.
