There’s a new temporary mural now painted in the bluff stairs in downtown St. Joseph. St. Joseph Today’s Amy Zapal tells WSJM News they’re glad to bring the stairs mural back after a year of skipping it due to the pandemic. The mural’s theme this year is beach toys.

“It’s a fun, whimsical mural for the summer,” Zapal said. “After the last year, we all probably need something fun and whimsical that makes us smile. The concept and the actual work was done by Texas-based artist Anat Ronen. She has done two murals for us before. One was the mural on our building, and the other one was the temporary mural on the stairs in 2019.”

Zapal says everyone loved the 2019 mural, featuring butterflies, so they stuck with the same artist. There are also murals painted on the St. Joe Today building on State Street and at 116 State Street, a couple blocks down.

“The fun thing about them is they’re in unexpected places. You’re kind of walking along, you’re driving along, and you see something that catches your eye, that makes you smile. I think that’s the whole purpose of these murals.”

If you head downtown this weekend to check out the mural, Zapal suggests hitting up a shop as this is the first Love Local weekend. Participating businesses will have special hours, sales, and other promotions going on.
