A grant of nearly $1 million will be used to create an economic plan ahead of the closure of the Palisades nuclear power plant next year. Congressman Fred Upton tells WSJM News the $969,000 grant was announced by the U.S. Commerce Department’s Economic Development Administration last week.

“We’re going to get nearly $1 million to try to ease the transition for economic activity in western Michigan because the Palisades plant impacts more than just Van Buren County” Upton said. “We’ve got a lot of people who are from Allegan and Berrien and Kalamazoo working there. It’s a major employer.”

Upton says the grant will help the area recover economically as Palisades, an employer of hundreds, heads into its end days. The grant is going to the Southwest Michigan Planning Commission.
