Two police officers from Berrien County are being credited with saving a Union Pier area homeowner from his burning home this week. Berrien County Sheriff’s Deputy Brittany Garza and New Buffalo Police Sergeant Russ Tillery were the first responders to arrive at the scene of a fire in the 15000 block of Locke Road in Chikaming Township Wednesday morning. They found the owner of the home inside and disoriented. The two went in and got the man out. He had suffered smoke inhalation and third degree burns across his body. He was taken to a hospital in Kalamazoo. The rescue was captured on police body cam. The cause of the fire isn’t yet known.
