A new way for supporters of the United Way of Southwest Michigan to advocate to state lawmakers on the organization’s behalf has been launched. The United Way’s Jennifer Tomshack tells WSJM News they’ve started an online advocacy platform where you can see a list of three priorities selected by the organization for the year.

“We’ve created an online platform that’s very simple to use,” Tomshack said. “It only takes a matter of a few clicks to reach out to our state legislators and send them an email that’s pre-crafted which you can customize a little bit if you like, and then you can also tweet at our elected officials and at the public at large to increase awareness.”

Tomshack says when a state lawmaker gets a flood of messages about one issue, they tend to notice. The issues selected this year by the United Way of Southwest Michigan are the Reconnect Michigan program, the Earned Income Tax Credit, and funding for preschool.
