A 54-year-old Benton Harbor man has died after being hit by a vehicle when he was in his wheelchair on East Empire in Benton Township. Michael Swanigan was in the westbound lane of Empire, traveling east, in the 13-hundred block just after 11:30 p.m. Saturday when he was hit by a vehicle. That driver sped off westbound on Empire, and Swanigan died after being taken to Spectrum Health Lakeland. Parts of the car were left at the scene, and Benton Township police say it appears to be a Chevy Malibu between 2008 and 2012. They have not located the car or its driver yet.
