Recent Rains Mean More Mosquitoes In Michigan

Think you’re getting bitten by more mosquitoes lately? You’re not imagining it. Michigan State entomology professor Ned Walker told Michigan News Network we have had a surge in the mosquito population in the state.

“It’s a result of that heavy rainfall we had almost three weeks ago now, I think,” Walker said. “Southeast Michigan got eight or nine inches of rain in a two day period, other parts of lower Michigan somewhat less, but it was enough to inundate low-lying grassy areas where the mosquito eggs are in the soil.”

Walker says this batch of mosquitoes should die off in a few weeks. However, there may be another batch with more rain.
