Governor Gretchen Whitmer has announced a new labor grant program aimed at bolstering opportunities for apprenticeships in the state. She introduced Michigan’s Statewide Targeted Apprenticeship Inclusion and Readiness System, or MiSTAIRS, at a union facility in Grand Rapids today. She said it will benefit both workers and their companies.

“Employers hugely benefit from programs like this, because we know that apprentices are more likely to stay with a certain employer if they complete an apprenticeship with that employer. The employer running the apprenticeship can train a talented future employee with the skills they are looking for.”

The program is funded through a $10 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. Whitmer says the funding will help over 1,600 workers enroll in registered apprenticeship programs.
