Coming soon will be Cures 2.0 from Congressman Fred Upton. He tells WSJM News it will be the sequel to his 2016 21st Century Cures legislation. That law was intended to boost funding for medical research and also to expedite the approval of new drugs. Upton and Congresswoman Diana DeGette have been working on the follow up for about a year now.

“We’re hoping to actually introduce our bill in September after Congress returns after Labor Day,” Upton said.

Upton says Cures 2.0 will aim for areas missed by the 2016 bill.

“We’ve had a number of discussions and forums with not only disease groups, but researchers, universities, industry folks on how they can make suggestions to us on how to improve the delivery of faster cures to the patient.”

Upton says aspects of Cures 2.0 could be more diversity in clinical studies, a new agency within the National Institutes of Health for research into therapies, and modernizing the Food and Drug administration. He believes the will is there in Congress for Cures 2.0 to be approved.
