Michigan lawmakers held a hearing on Tuesday to discuss security threats to the Mackinac Bridge. House Transportation Committee Chair Jack OMalley told Michigan News Network he was surprised to find out that the bridge is not classified as critical infrastructure.

“We had a gentleman climb the tower,” O’Malley said. “He was charged under the critical infrastructure law, which is a felony. The case was dismissed because the Mackinac Bridge is not part of the critical infrastructure law.”

Mackinac Bridge Authority officials say one change that might help is to beef up the penalties for trespassing on the bridge.
