With a new school year about to start, the Berrien County Health Department is planning two Back to School Bashes for this month. The first will be this coming Monday in Niles and the second will be the following Monday in Benton Township. Department spokesperson Gillian Conrad tells WSJM News the events are a way for parents and kids to get what they need to be ready for school.

“There are healthy snacks and activities, giveaways for kids of all ages, and tons of resources and information for parents and caregivers on parenting education, different programs and services available at the health department, as well as health insurance assistance and much, much more,” Conrad said.

Conrad says several community partners will be at each Back to School Bash.

“Including local law enforcement, the Great Start Collaborative of Berrien County, and the Lions Club project, Kids Sight, which will allow for even older kids to have their eyes checked.”

Police and fire departments will be there to show their vehicles to the kids. Conrad says the health department has held a Back to School Bash each year for several years, but this is the first time they’ve added a Niles location. The event Monday at the health department office in Niles will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event at the health department office in Benton Township the following Monday, August 30, will run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
