There will be a mask mandate at St. Joseph Public Schools this year. That’s after a vote of the board of education Monday night. The body heard nearly three hours of comments from people both opposed to masks and in favor of the mandate. Superintendent Jenny Fee said she’s devoted a great deal of time to the mask question, and in the end she could only recommend one thing.

“I believe firmly and morally that a universal masking policy for our district and our kids is the right thing to do right now.”

Parents who were opposed said it’s too hard on the kids to be masked all day, while parents in favor noted the masks work best if everyone wears them. In the end, the board’s approved Return to Learn plan includes the mask rule. It applies to students K through 12, visitors, staff, and volunteers. Fee said it was the best way to ensure the kids are in their classrooms with their teachers learning.
