The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department is advising everyone of a new scam. It says the suspects are using names of deputies that work for the sheriff’s department to try to collect money. The caller will claim to be the deputy, sergeant, or lieutenant and also sometimes use the name of family members of the would-be victim. The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department says it would never call anyone and ask them to send money directly to them to bail someone out or cover fines and costs. A lot of times, when the phone numbers used in these cases are traced, it turns out they’re from another country. The sheriff’s department also noted it has heard reports of the same scam being attempted using the names of other law enforcement agencies.
