Should people who buy “union made” electric vehicles get an extra tax credit? Several foreign carmakers, which don’t have UAW represented plants, object to the idea, saying it discriminates against workers who have chosen not to unionize. Congressman Dan Kildee of Flint backs the plan and says it’s right to promote unions.

“In a time where we’ve seen decreasing rates of unionization, falling wages, decreased emphasis on worker protection, decreased emphasis on good benefits, that we ought to try to tilt the scale back in favor of an economy that is sustainable,” Kildee argues.

The current proposal before Congress would have a base $7,500 credit for anybody who buys an electric vehicle, with $2,500 added on if the vehicle is American made. The credit would rise another $2,500 if it’s made by unionized workers.
