South Haven’s new public disk golf course will open Friday. Retired South Haven Visitors Bureau Director Scott Reinert tells WSJM News the course is a partnership between several South Haven area groups. It’s located on property owned by the South Haven Area Recreation Authority just south of town off 14th Avenue and adjacent to the Van Buren Trail.

“We’ve got 18 holes with varying degrees of length as well as difficulty,” Reinert said. “We feel good that we’ve got a good blend. Some of the holes are fairly short and not as challenging for some, but for beginners it would be a lot of fun. and then there are some more challenging holes as well.”

Reinert says backers chose disk golf because it’s quickly grown in popularity. Disk golf is kind of like regular golf, only you throw a disk and try to get it into a basket instead of a hole. This is the first disk golf course in South Haven.

“The closest ones to us are in Saugatuck and Watervliet. We’ve not had a course like this. There are some privately owned courses in the area, but this is the first public course that will be available and free to play.”

Reinert says there will be an open house at the course Friday from 3 to 5 and a ribbon cutting in the afternoon. After that, the course will be open dawn to dusk for anyone to use. He notes the community has been supportive with almost all of the hole sponsorships bought up and local groups contributing to develop the attraction.
