Andrews University is celebrating the spirit of community following its fifth annual Change Day. It was held Thursday, September 16 and featured teams of volunteers from Andrews spreading out across southwest Michigan. Andrews Chaplain Jose Bourget tells WSJM News ahead of Change day, the university reaches out to non-profits.

“We enlist our employees, faculty, staff, and our students, and say let’s go out and make a deep impression in our community,” Bourget said. “Let them know that we support them and what they’re doing.”

More than 700 volunteers from Andrews worked on a variety of projects for Change Day. Bourget says it’s a goal of the university to make a difference.

“It’s a way to tell our students, show our students doing good in the community is what we hope your education gets you, and you don’t need to wait until you graduate for that to happen. That can start now.”

Volunteers helped out at organizations including Habitat for Humanity, the Humane Society of Southwestern Michigan, Neighbor 2 Neighbor, Operation Christmas Child, and more. Classes were canceled for the duration of Change Day, providing an opportunity for everyone to be involved. Bourget says the day also provides opportunities to lean about ways students can help the community year-round. You can find out more here.
