A donation to Michigan Lutheran High School in St. Joseph is allowing for an expansion and upgrade project. Principal Matt Herbst tells WSJM News Bob Kohn, who has supported many projects around the area, came to the school in February and offered to help it build on some facilities.

“He has a heart for the ministry of Michigan Lutheran and the athletic program,” Herbst said. “So, what this is going towards is space for an additional auxiliary gymnasium and a brand new, state of the art weight room for our high school. It’ll also house a team room where our teams can gather together in a nice space to review footage and film and talk as a team.

The space can also be used for classes, and Herbst says the project will include expanded office and storage space and a manager’s room. The total cost of the project isn’t quite known yet, but Herbst says it’s likely to come in at around $2.5 million. He tells us Kohn makes the work possible.

“He’s been instrumental and been very upfront on making sure this does get built, and we have the plans and we’ve broken ground, and we’re ready to move forward.”

Herbst says this will be the first major construction project at Michigan Lutheran since it opened in 1972. He’s excited to see the work get started, telling us it shows the school is vibrant and moving forward. Herbst says there will be a groundbreaking this Sunday at 2 p.m. and the community is invited. It’s hoped the project can be finished in time for the next school year.
