Lake Michigan College’s Educational Opportunity Center has received a nearly $2 million grant to help people pursue a college education. LMC says the $1.95 million comes from the federal government and will be distributed to the college in the amount of $391,000 per year over five years. It’s intended to provide services to students in Berrien, Cass, Van Buren, and Allegan counties, along with students in La Porte and St. Joseph counties in Indiana. The funding will start to be used in the 2021-2022 academic year. The Educational Opportunity Center program is an LMC service that provides information and help to adults age 19 years and older who are interested in furthering their education. The services include academic tutoring, career assessment, help completing applications for college, referrals to adult education centers, and financial and economic literacy counseling. LMC has hosted the Educational Opportunity Center since 1994, and it’s served more than 25,000 people in that time.
