Governor Whitmer was asked Wednesday as she signed the 2020 state budget about Ford’s choice to locate two new electric-vehicle and battery plants in Tennessee and Kentucky. The governor said the state wasn’t given a chance to compete for the $11 billion investment.

“I think there were probably a lot of factors that went in to their determination,” said Whitmer. “It wasn’t a state selection. It looked more like a site selection, but us having tools that we need to be competitive, I’m always looking to make Michigan more competitive.”

She says while the state would have been willing to put “solutions” on the table to win the plants, officials were not given “a real opportunity” to do so.
