Indiana Michigan Power is marking National Energy Awareness Month by reminding everyone of how they can save themselves some money by consuming less energy. Spokesperson Schnee Garrett tells WSJM News there are some surprising ways you can save on your energy bill.

“One of the things that some people don’t know is you’ll want to unplug any electrical device that’s not being used,” Garrett said. “Some appliances draw power even when they’re turned off or when you’re not using them, especially anything that has a digital clock on it.”

Garrett says the larger appliances do use up the most energy. So, it’s better to wait until you have a full load in the dishwasher or washing machine before running them. There’s also an easy way to save water.

“If you take a five minute shower instead of a bath, a five minute shower used about seven and a half gallons of hot water. That’s compared to if you fill a bathtub up, that could use about 20 gallons.”

That will also reduce your energy bill because that’s less water to heat. Ahead of the winter, Garrett says you should have your furnace inspected to be sure it’s running efficiently. You can find more energy saving ideas at ElectricIdeas.com.
