Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed a bill from state Senator Kim LaSata to rename a portion of I-94 in Berrien County after a Michigan Department of Transportation worker who was killed along the side of the highway. Kevin White was an MDOT worker and the supervisor of Benton Township. He was working along I-94 near mile marker 33 in October of 2019 when he was struck by a tire that flew off a semi. LaSata told WSJM News last month her bill renames I-94 from the I-196 interchange to Napier Avenue the Kevin D. White Memorial Highway.

“It’s dangerous,” LaSata said. “You see people working on the highway and it’s a dangerous job. He has given back to his community and we need to acknowledge his contribution to Benton Harbor.”

Governor Whitmer said, “Memorializing Kevin is important for his family and the communities he served, but it also is a stark reminder the people working on our roads are someone’s parents, siblings, children and caregivers who want to go home after their workday like the rest of us.” Signs reflecting the name change will now be placed along the side of the highway.
