As the U.S. House prepares to vote on increasing the debt ceiling Tuesday night, Congressman Fred Upton has announced he will be voting no. He told WSJM News that’s after Democrats in Congress and the president pushed through a $1.9 trillion economic stimulus package this year. He said he’s not helping increase the nation’s credit limit.
“We’ve reached it because we saw a very partisan bill pass earlier this year, the COVID package, without even seeing the final spending done on the previous bipartisan bills,” Upton said. “And now at the same time, the president is pushing this $3.5 trillion spending plan as well, all of which will need an increase in the debt ceiling, and it’s time to say no to that spending.”
Upton was expecting a close vote in the House on the debt ceiling. On social media, he said he “won’t play any role in helping the Democrats pass their partisan $3.5 trillion tax-and-spend agenda. In my view, raising the debt ceiling really does open the door to this reckless spending. We can’t leave some $29 trillion in debt to our kids and grandkids.”
