“Every person in the state of Michigan deserves access to clean and safe drinking water,” says Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist. “And every community deserves lead-free pipes. We are committed to doing everything we can to ensure that every parent in Benton Harbor can give their kid a glass of water with confidence.”

Gilchrist made the announcement of more state investment in replacing lead pipes in Benton Harbor. He says Governor Whitmer has issued an order that will replace all lead service lines in the city in 18 months. Given officials have been aware of the issue for three years, he was asked why they’ve not stepped in to help the city with their efforts until now. Gilchrist said the new state budget gave the state the needed resources.

Bottled water is available for free for Benton Harbor residents, and 20 semis will deliver more next week. Water is available today from 4 to 6 pm at Southwest Michigan Community Action Agency at 331 Miller Street and tomorrow at God’s Household of Faith at 275 Pipestone from 2 to 6 pm.
