As the weather cools down, Indiana Michigan Power is reminding everyone of things they can do to save themselves money on energy. Spokesperson Tracy Warner tells WSJM News you can start by having your furnace inspected and checking doors and windows for drafts. Also, think about what temperature you’d like to keep your thermostat on.

“Just reducing it from 72 degrees to 68 degrees can affect your energy bill by up to 10%,” Warner said. “Be sure to change the furnace filter as your furnace requires. There’s probably something on there that shows you how often.  A lot of people do it once a month…The dust and dirt can clog the parts, and that makes it harder to run.”

When cleaning, Warner says you should vacuum the vents to remove dust that can make the furnace less efficient. Those who are struggling with their bills can seek help by calling 211 or signing up for one of I&M’s payment arrangements, like one that splits your yearly energy bills about equally throughout all the months.
